Some recordings need a careful stitch; others invite a little musical reinvention. From rescuing a troublesome moment to reconsidering how a song unfolds, the work begins with the performance—and keeps its personality very much intact.
- The finest takes, brought together
- Comping brings chosen passages from different takes into one performance. Edits, crossfades, and transitions help the joins disappear without losing the breaths, phrasing, and human character that belong in the music.
- A nudge, not a straitjacket
- Timing and pitch refinement, vocal and instrumental alignment, and rhythmic tightening where needed. The pocket matters more than perfect obedience to a grid.
- Uninvited noises, politely dismissed
- Attention to clicks, pops, distracting noise, abrupt cuts, and uneven clip levels, within the limits of the recording. Deliberate grit is not mistaken for a fault.
- Room for a splendid rethink
- Production development and arrangement changes can include reshaping sections, adjusting length and transitions, reconsidering layers, and developing textures or effects. New parts, additional recording, and more extensive creative work are discussed and scoped separately—not quietly assumed.
The result: a thoughtfully assembled recording, ready for the next stage. A modest repair or a more adventurous reworking—the extent is agreed together.
A vocal that holds your attention. A rhythm that refuses to sit still. That peculiar little sound, finally in precisely the right place. Here, the individual recordings become a coherent musical experience, with room for both the grand gesture and the almost-hidden delight.
- Every part finds its place
- Level balance, panning, tonal shaping, and space between instruments establish clarity and focus. Masking and phase relationships are examined so each part can make its contribution without elbowing the others aside.
- The pulse and the poise
- Compression, dynamic control, transient shaping, and automation guide impact and movement. Intimate passages can stay intimate; the arrival of the chorus can still feel like an event.
- Depth, colour & delightful deviations
- Reverb, delay, saturation, parallel processing, and creative effects shape atmosphere and character where the music calls for them. Experimentation has a purpose: to make the recording more itself.
- The whole picture, closely examined
- Balances and details are checked in context, in mono, and across listening conditions. Refinements respond to the artist’s feedback; instrumentals, alternate mixes, and stems can be included when agreed in the project scope.
The result: a finished mix prepared for mastering, with agreed versions supplied. Substantial editing, new production, or arrangement changes are identified separately so nothing important slips between services.
The mix has found its voice. Now comes a fresh, exacting listen to how it meets the wider world. A single receives its final preparation; a collection becomes a considered whole. The remarkable difference may be a wonderfully small one.
- A fresh pair of exacting ears
- Critical listening assesses tonal balance, dynamics, stereo presentation, and potential technical issues. If a concern is better resolved in the mix, it is brought back for discussion rather than disguised with a grand flourish.
- Presence without the squeeze
- Careful equalisation, dynamic processing, level and peak control, and stereo refinement where appropriate. Loudness serves the music and intended release; it is not a contest to remove the last remaining breath.
- Distinct characters, a common thread
- For an EP or album, relative levels, tonal continuity, running order, gaps, fades, and transitions are considered together. Each composition keeps its character while belonging to the same listening experience.
- Ready for its public appearance
- Final listening and technical checks attend to clipping, unwanted artifacts, beginnings, endings, and file consistency. Exports are prepared for the agreed release formats, with sample-rate conversion and dither where required; sequencing and metadata needs are confirmed for the delivery package.
The result: release-ready masters in the agreed formats. Distribution and specialist manufacturing deliverables are not assumed; those requirements are settled before work begins.

A few useful particulars give the imagination somewhere to begin. Here is what to share, what to have ready, and what we will settle together.
Introduce the music
In your inquiry, include a listening link, the number of songs, and whether you need editing, mixing, mastering, or a combination. Tell Doc B where the recording stands and what you hope it will become. Undecided about the next step? Say so—we can work that out together.
Declare the delightful peculiarities
Share a few reference recordings and what you enjoy about them. Mention what needs attention and what must remain untouched: the glorious distortion, the intake of breath, the odd little sound that makes it yours. Timestamps are welcome accomplices.
Gather the sonic particulars
For editing, have the relevant recordings or takes ready, with notes on the changes you need. For mixing, have the individual recorded tracks and a rough mix ready. For mastering, have your current mixes ready and tell us whether they are final. A listening link is enough for the introduction; we will confirm file preparation and transfer instructions before you send the working files.
Set the practical coordinates
Include your preferred completion date, any fixed release deadline, budget considerations, and required versions or formats. Before work begins, we will agree on scope, availability, fees, timing, revisions, and delivery. Creative surprises are welcome; surprises in the arrangements are not.
A note for the unusually curious
That odd little sound you nearly deleted? Keep a copy. The accidental texture, the unruly harmony, the take that broke the rules but felt right—we would very much like to hear it.
Not every happy accident belongs in the finished record. But it deserves an audition before anyone shows it the door.

The Mind Behind the Marvellous
Doc B is an audio engineer, producer, and the musical juggernaut behind Doc B’s Euphonious Emporium. He previously fronted touring bands on vocals and bass, later performing as a bassist. His work as a guitar luthier, certified by Taylor and Fender, brought another perspective: how the smallest physical adjustment can change what a musician hears and feels.
A Berklee alumnus with Avid certification in Pro Tools, he has also shared the studio with Grammy-winning producers, further shaping his approach to making records. These experiences have developed a rather particular ear—and the skills to act on what it hears. He understands the performance from inside it, the instrument beneath it, and the engineering that brings it to the listener.
Why an Emporium?
Doc B founded the Emporium to bring together what he too often found missing in his experience of the industry: technical depth, genuine collaboration, and the patience to pursue an idea beyond the obvious answer. A peculiar request should receive a proper hearing. An artist should not have to compete with a routine.
Here, the work begins with what the artist wants the listener to feel. Then come the particulars: the breath before a phrase, the weight of a rhythm, the space that lets a chorus arrive. Every detail is examined in context, alternatives are compared, and adjustments are tested against the whole recording. A splendid experiment is welcome; it still has to earn its place in the music.
That attention extends from the first conversation to the final checks. Knowing what to preserve—and when to leave it alone—is as much a part of the craft as knowing what to change.
A small interrogation of the obvious
Even a promising adjustment receives a little cross-examination:
- What do we want the listener to feel?
- Does this change serve the music, or simply draw attention to itself?
- Does the recording lose anything worthwhile when we remove it?
The corners remain open because the investigation is never closed to a better answer. Even our favourite ideas must stand up to a careful listen.
